Dentures or Dental Implants?

A Comparative Guide

For many people tooth loss and aging are inevitably linked, but they don’t have to be. There are a variety of options available to help you overcome tooth loss and maintain your quality of life. To help you determine what is the right choice for you here is a guide to the differences between dentures and dental implants.

What are dentures?

Dentures refer to a removable plate or wire with false teeth affixed to it. Dentures come in either full or partial forms, depending on the extent of your tooth loss. For individuals with no remaining natural teeth, or whose natural teeth need to be removed, a full denture is required. A full denture adheres to your gums and the roof of your mouth using suction. Dentures are fully removable, and need to be removed and cleaned after eating using appropriate specialty tools and products.

For individuals who have retained some of their natural teeth a partial denture may be all that is required. Partial dentures use metal clips or more natural looking connectors to anchor your false teeth to your natural teeth. This makes partial dentures more secure than full dentures, which rely on suction alone. However, partial dentures only work for individuals with at least some remaining natural teeth.

If you do get dentures, either full or partial, from Future Smiles, then Vadim Dumbrava will go over proper care techniques with you.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants involve the use of an artificial root made of titanium which is inserted into your jawbone to act as a replacement for the roots of your natural teeth. One or more artificial teeth are attached using titanium implants. Dental implants are the most secure solution for tooth loss because they are fully anchored to your jawbone, whereas both full and partial dentures are still removable and therefore inherently less secure. Dental implants can be used to replace as many teeth as necessary, and both look and feel more natural than full or partial dentures.
