Why is the sky blue? Are we alone in the universe? What are dentures made of?
Denturist Vlad Dumbrava from the Future Smiles Clinic in Calgary is still working on the first two questions, but when it comes to dentures, he can address all your concerns with ease.
Dentures are made with plastic or porcelain fused to a gum coloured acrylic. These are synthetic fibres made from a polymer. The acrylic material is extremely resistant to oils and chemicals, which makes them perfect for all the things one's mouth goes through. The human mouth is the place where food is first broken down for the body and your dentures need to withstand the stress of chewing. Your teeth and gums are hard to replace, but acrylic is the next best material. For partial dentures, metal framework needs to be used to house your missing teeth.
Although resistant, porcelain and gum coloured acrylic are not indestructible and don’t last forever. Visiting Denturist Vlad routinely will ensure that you reach the full life span of your dentures, usually 4-5 years.
All dentures, either partial or full, require a great deal of care, especially when cleaning. Denturist Vlad recommends brushing your dentures often with appropriate denture brushes and soaking your dentures at night to prevent them from drying up. As careful as you are with your dentures, accidents do happen and, from time to time, they can break. We advise against repairing your own dentures. At Future Smiles, we have seen too many cases where patients tried to fix their own dentures only to cause further damage. We understand that nobody wants to be without their teeth for too long. If you bring them to our on-site lab, we will have your dentures repaired in a timely fashion.
