Everything You Need to Know About Overdentures

Want an affordable denture solution that combines the stability of denture implants with the economical cost of full/partial dentures? At our denture clinic, we offer quality overdentures for our Calgary patients.

With the advances in dental health awareness and technology, many more patients are able to keep their natural teeth for an entire lifetime. However, there are still some people who may lose a tooth, or a few, and not think much of it.

It’s important to remember that a missing tooth is far more than just a gap in your smile: it can have serious oral health and psychological effects including:

  • Increased risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease
  • Further tooth loss
  • Shifting of remaining teeth
  • Loss of self-esteem, affecting your personal and professional life
  • Inability to eat a healthy and balanced diet

Why Visit Future Smiles Denture Clinic

At Future Smiles, we offer a wide range of affordable and quality denture solutions from partial dentures to denture implants and overdentures to help meet all your unique tooth replacement needs and give you a healthy, beautiful smile for life.

What are Overdentures?

Overdentures are a type of denture fitted over or attached to dental implants. This technique gives the denture greater support and retention, making them a more stable alternative to traditional full or partial dentures.

Are you a candidate for overdentures?

Before fitting overdentures, it’s important to visit your local denture clinic to talk to your oral care professional about whether this is the right choice for you.

Your denturist will need to establish tooth root condition and suitability for treatment as they need to be healthy and free from infection. In addition, patients who have had successful root canal treatments may be good candidates for overdentures.

What is Involved in the Overdenture Treatment?

Once your oral condition is evaluated and the overdenture treatment is deemed suitable, one of two models of dental implant-retained overdentures may be recommended. This can include bar-retained or ball-retained implant-supported overdentures.

The steps involved in either overdenture treatment typically include:

X-Rays & Oral Impressions
If an overdenture treatment is deemed suitable, then further diagnostic testing is done including X-ray imaging, oral impressions and, in some instances, a cone beam CT scan.

This is to ensure your jaw bone is strong and wide enough for dental implants.

Initial Surgery
This prepares your gums for dental implants. An opening is created in the gum tissue and a hole is gently made in the jaw bone, so that the dental implants can be inserted.

Temporary dentures are custom-made for the patient to wear before implantation surgery.

Healing Period

During this healing period, the dental implants are given time to fuse with the jaw bone. Placing as little pressure as possible on these new implants is crucial for timely healing and reduced discomfort.

Second Surgery
A second surgery is then performed to reopen gum tissue at the implant location, so that the peaks of the implants may be fitted with a healing collar.

This procedure allows the gum to heal properly before the overdentures are attached and fixed in position

How long does the treatment take?

The entire overdenture treatment will take between 3-6 months, with patients soon being able to enjoy a secure and natural looking smile.

Benefits of Overdentures vs Partial Dentures

Overdentures offer a variety of advantages over conventional full/partial dentures, all of which can affect your quality of life and make you happier and healthier.

Some of the benefits of this denture solution include:

  • No diet restrictions as the overdenture is secured by dental implants
  • No need for messy adhesives
  • Unlike a partial denture, an overdenture can help stop the deterioration of your natural facial contours
  • Improved speech and chewing functions
  • Improved aesthetics of your smile
  • Unlike conventional full/partial dentures, overdentures will work to prevent future bone loss

What is Involved in Overdenture Care?

One of the major hygienic benefits of overdentures is that they are removable and can be taken out at night for cleaning. Doing so ensures the longevity and healthy condition of your denture solution in the long run.

As with regular oral hygiene maintenance, dental implants require regular cleaning to prevent infection.

In addition, having frequent checkups at your local denture clinic is crucial as it gives your denturist the chance to monitor the condition of your overdentures and make any necessary adjustments to improve your comfort and appearance.
