Easy Tips on How to Look After Your Partial Denture

Are you a first-time denture wearer? Here are some tips on how to care for your partial dentures and why it's important to make regular visits to your local Calgary denture clinic.

Missing even just a few teeth can pose significant dental challenges for patients. The good news? There are a range of tooth replacement options from denture implants to partial dentures that can be used to fill in the gaps.

Partial dentures are one of the most commonly recommended tooth replacement options in Canada and have many benefits including:

  • More cost-effective than denture implants
  • High-quality (not cheap!) partial dentures won’t affect your speech or diet
  • Custom partial dentures are natural-looking and comfortable
  • Improved appearance
  • Prevents remaining teeth from moving
  • Reduces your risk of tooth decay and gum disease and protects the health of remaining teeth
  • Prevents any significant facial changes

At our SW Calgary denture clinic, we offer a wide range of tooth replacement options from full/partial dentures to implant-supported dentures to meet all your unique needs & ensure the health and longevity of your teeth, gums and smile.

How to Look After Your Partial Dentures

Proper dental care when wearing partial dentures is very important to protect the health of your remaining teeth and to ensure the longevity of your dentures.

Failure to clean your dentures can lead to many problems including:

  • Additional tooth loss
  • Sore spots and significant discomfort
  • Plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth decay
  • Serious general health issues including increased risk for stroke and lung disease

Therefore, when visiting your local denture clinic, it’s important to take the time and discuss with your denturist the ways in which you can keep your replacement teeth clean and improve the health of your mouth, gums and remaining teeth.

Cleaning your dentures

Daily cleaning of your denture is necessary to prevent buildup of food debris, stains and tartar. This can cause problems with appearance, bad breath, gum irritation and infections.

Brushing
  • Use a soft toothbrush or denture brush to clean your denture along with soap and warm running water. AVOID using toothpaste as this can scratch the denture, making it more prone to collecting debris and stains.

  • Remember, DENTURES CAN BREAK. Always fill the sink with water and then clean your dentures over it, just in case they slip out of your hands by accident.

  • Brush or rinse the denture after each meal to prevent the buildup of debris

Soaking
  • You can use denture tablets or solutions for soaking, to help loosen and remove any stains and deposits.

  • Don’t soak your denture if you have a metal one as this can destroy the material. Instead, clean it with a soft brush and warm water.

  • Don’t sleep with your dentures. Remove them and soak them overnight.

Caring for your natural teeth

With partial dentures, you must take extra care of your remaining teeth and gums. Even with full dentures, you still must take good care of your mouth. Be sure to brush your gums, tongue and palate with a SOFT BRUSH twice a day.

This will help remove plaque, stains and will improve the general health of your mouth. In addition, schedule regular visits to your denture clinic so any problems can be detected and treated early by your denturist/dentist.

Why You Should Never Settle For Cheap Dentures

Dentures are the biggest, most important dental investment you will ever make and the decision will affect your appearance and comfort for many years in the future.

Even if you diligently look after your replacement teeth, selecting low quality, cheap dentures means that you will significantly compromise on the function, comfort and durability of your replacement teeth.

Drawbacks of Cheap Dentures:

  • More frequent repairs and higher repair costs
  • Loss of bone density
  • Severe diet restrictions
  • Discomfort and pain, which significantly lower your quality of life
  • Speech troubles
  • Poor appearance
