What is a Implant Supported Fixed Bridge?

This week we will continue our series of posts about dental implants and answer questions about what they are, who is potentially a candidate and how to properly care for them.

Missing teeth not only decrease your quality of life by making eating difficult or painful, they can also severely affect your emotional well-being. No one likes to be embarrassed, so talk to Dr. Dumbrava today about restoring your smile so you can show it off with confidence.

One option available to individuals who are missing many or most of their teeth is an Implant Supported Fixed Bridge. An Implant Supported Fixed Bridge consists of two or more artificial roots are surgically inserted into your jawbone. These artificial roots are made of titanium, making them both lightweight and strong, and resemble tiny screws.

A "bridge" of three or more artificial teeth is then attached to the top of these artificial roots. A bridge refers to a set of natural-looking replacement teeth. Though this method is similar to a traditional denture bridge the use of implants means that the bridge does not rely on the teeth on either side to support it, doing away with unattractive fasteners.

In order to give you the most natural looking smile possible Dr. Dumbrava will create a set of custom artificial teeth for you. This way we can ensure that your artificial teeth are the right size, shape and colour so that the overall look of your smile remains natural. Because the teeth are anchored to your jawbone it is much easier to chew than with traditional dentures. This also helps to counteract the bone loss associated with dentures because of the stimulation the jaw experiences while you chew.

If you care for your dental implants properly they will last for the rest of your life. Simply treat your dental implant as you would your natural teeth, brushing them at least twice a day and paying special attention to your gums. It is also recommended that you book follow up appointments with Vadim Dumbrava every six months so that he can examine your Implant Supported Fixed Bridge and ensure it is functioning properly.
