With so many options available for tooth loss it can be difficult to decide which is right for you. One tough decision you may be faced with is choosing between dentures and denture implants. Before you decide, it''s important to first understand the difference between the two.

Dentures

Dentures are a method of replacing missing teeth that uses a gum-coloured acrylic plate to hold a set of replacement teeth, which is then secured in your mouth. There are two common types of dentures – partial dentures and full dentures.

With full dentures, you must wait until all your teeth have been removed and your gums healed before you can receive your two denture fixtures. You will be without teeth during the healing period.

With partial dentures, you will have certain teeth added to your mouth by use of a metal framework that is secured using your remaining teeth. In some cases, additional crowns may be used to provide extra stability. As partial dentures only replace some of your teeth, you won't be completely without teeth at any point.

All dentures are custom made for your mouth by specialized dental manufacturers using information and data from your denture clinic consultations.

Denture Implants

Unlike dentures, denture implants are permanent fixtures in your mouth and this means they are often more comfortable and stable. The actual implants are metal structures which are surgically placed into your jawbone, and it is on these metal structures replacement that teeth can be securely placed. The extra stability offered by denture implants often make them feel more natural then regular dentures.

Which One is Best For You?

Both dentures and denture implants are great solutions for tooth loss and ultimately only your denturist will be able to give you definitive advice after your consultation. However, each has their own advantages and disadvantages. If you're suffering form almost total tooth loss there may not be much option except for full dentures. However, if you still have some teeth remaining then both partial dentures and denture implants can be good options. One of the benefits of partial dentures is that they do not require surgery and so they can be a good first option. However, if partial dentures do not feel comfortable or stable then you may want to consider denture implants. Your denturist will have the final say and they will be able to advise you as to which options are available to you.
