What is a Fixed Bridge on Implants?

This week we will continue our series of posts about dental implants and answer questions about what they are, who is potentially a candidate and how to properly care for them.

Missing teeth can cause not only embarrassment  but can also affect your physical well being. A full set of teeth is required to properly chew food, ensuring that your body is getting all the nutrients it needs.

There are a variety of options for individuals who are missing all their teeth. One option is a Fixed Bridge on Implants. A Fixed Bridge on Implants is when a "bridge" of teeth (in this case, all your lower teeth or all your upper teeth) is firmly affixed to your jaw. This is achieved through the use of tiny, artificial teeth roots made of titanium which resemble tiny screws. These artificial roots are surgically implanted into the jawbone, where they fuse with the bone and create a secure anchoring point for the bridge. The bridge is then placed on top of the roots and secured to them. This method is more secure than Removable Full Dentures because it uses the titanium roots to secure your teeth, not denture adhesives. This ensures that your speech and chewing capacity are not adversely affected like they are with Removable Full Dentures because your teeth will never move or shift in your mouth.

One of the benefits of a Fixed Bridge on Implants is that unlike removable dentures dental implants allow the jawbone to be stimulated through acts like chewing, which helps to prevent bone loss in your jawbone.

To ensure that your new smile looks natural Dr. Dumbrava will create a custom set of artificial teeth for you. This ensures that the teeth are the correct colour, size and shape for your mouth.

If you care for your Fixed Bridge on Implants properly they will last for the rest of your life. Simply treat your dental implant as you would your natural teeth, brushing them at least twice a day and paying special attention to your gums. It is also recommended that you book follow up appointments with Vadim Dumbrava every six months so that he can examine your overdentures and ensure they are functioning properly.
