What is an Overdenture?

This week we will conclude our series of posts about dental implants and answer questions about what they are, who is a potential candidate and how to properly care for them.

Missing your teeth not only affects your smile, but can also severely impact both your emotional and physical well-being. Without teeth it can be difficult to ensure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs, and lost teeth result in bone loss. Missing teeth can also affect your self confidence and cause embarrassment.

One option available to individuals with no natural teeth left is an overdenture. An overdenture involves either a new set of dentures or an existing set of dentures, and is a more economical option than a fixed bridge on implants. The overdenture is seated on top of a pair of artificial roots, which are made of titanium that resemble tiny screws. The roots are surgically inserted into the jawbone and bond with it, creating a secure hold. One of the benefits of overdentures over traditional dentures is that no adhesive pastes are required to hold the dentures in place, and overdentures do not impact speech or chewing like removable dentures.

In order to ensure you smile is natural looking, Dr. Dumbrava will create a complete set of custom artificial teeth for you. This ensures that your new teeth are the right size, shape and colour, so that the overall look is seamless and natural looking. Because the teeth are anchored to your jawbone you are also able to counteract the effects of bone loss, which occurs when teeth are missing. This is possible because the jawbone needs to be stimulated through  chewing in order to counteract the bone loss. Since fully removable dentures are not attached to the jawbone, the jawbone is not stimulated and bone loss will occur.

If you care for your dental implants properly they will last for the rest of your life. Simply treat your dental implant as you would your natural teeth, brushing them at least twice a day and paying special attention to your gums. It is also recommended that you book follow up appointments with Vadim Dumbrava every six months so that he can examine your overdentures and ensure they are functioning properly.
