5 Interesting Facts About Dentures You Never Knew

To anyone who hasn’t experienced dentures themselves, there are many ideas and myths that pop up when that word comes up in the dentist/denturist’s chair. However, if you are going to be wearing full/partial dentures or denture implants, it’s important to know the truth about these tooth replacement options.

Myth 1: Dentures Are For Old People

This is one of the most common misconceptions about dentures: that young people (under the age of 65) don’t need dentures whereas ALL seniors (over the age of 65) need them.

Neither one of these assumptions is true. Dentures are recommended if and when a patient’s natural teeth have sustained injury or decay to the extent that they:

  • Negatively affect quality of life
  • Can no longer function effectively without causing pain
  • Hinder a person’s ability to stick to a nutritious and healthy diet

This can happen to both young and older patients. It has less to do with age and more to do with the condition of a person’s natural teeth.

Myth 2: Dentures Are More Common Today Than They Were 50 Years Ago

Many decades ago, good oral health was a lesser-known aspect of health care and many people primarily visited the dentist to have their teeth pulled out when they experienced pain. As a result, far more people ended up without their natural teeth and resorted to wearing dentures.

In recent years, however, proper brushing and flossing are far more common, as are routine dental checkups and cleanings, which has led to the dropping prevalence of dentures.

Modern Denture Solutions

Also, given the rapid advancement of denture technology, a higher number of patients are opting for more modern denture solutions such as dental implants or flexible dentures which provide greater comfort and a more natural appearance than traditional full/partial dentures.

Myth 3: Dentures Are Very Noticeable

For many people, the idea of wearing dentures can be scary or embarrassing because they assume that these replacement teeth will appear noticeable and unnatural. However, modern, high-quality and custom built dentures can be molded exactly to your jaw and gum line and will feel and look very natural.

Myth 4: Dentures Last Forever

Dentures can be very realistic and do an excellent job of simulating the functionality of natural teeth, but the material they are made from is softer than enamel and will wear out.

Depending on the type of dentures and how well they are cared for, a partial/full denture will usually serve their purpose for 5-7 years before needing to be replaced. They will also need a reline every 2-3 years.

FREE Dental Repairs & Adjustments

When you opt for traditional complete or partial dentures, our SW Calagary denture clinic offers 1 year FREE adjustments & repairs to ensure your false teeth always fit comfortably.

Myth 5: Dentures Eliminate Any Need For a Denturist/Dentist

Many patients believe that once they have replacement teeth, they no longer need to visit their local denture clinic. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Regular check-ups with your denturist will allow them to:

  • Perform any necessary cancer screenings
  • Check your bone levels
  • Check your dentures for a loose-fit or any signs of wear
  • Make the necessary adjustments to ensure you stay comfortable
