Implant supported dentures are an innovative tooth replacement alternative to traditional dentures. However, they do have certain limitations which may not make them the right choice for every patient.
For many patients, dental implants are an advanced tooth replacement option which offers a natural-looking, long-lasting solution for missing teeth due to age, injury and/or gum disease.
Denture-supported implants have many benefits over traditional dentures, including:
- They look, feel and function more like natural teeth
- They can last for 20 years or more, if taken care of properly
- There is no slippage, movement, or need for messy adhesives
- Improved speaking and chewing ability
- No more sore spots
- Prevent bone loss in the jaw

How are Denture Implants Different From Regular Dentures?
While a regular denture rests on your gums, denture implants are supported by and attached to tooth implants - a screw made of titanium that is surgically placed into your jaw by a denturist.
This tooth implant mimics the root of your tooth and lessens the effects of bone loss resulting from missing teeth. It can support fixed replacement of several teeth, or an entire denture set.
Who is the ideal dental implant candidate?
Dental implants are a great tooth replacement option for many patients. However, there are certain factors which could affect your candidacy, including:
- Inadequate bone in the area
- Presence of periodontal disease
- Bite complications
- Whether or not you are a smoker
- Medications such as blood thinners
Limitations of Denture Implants
While denture implants are an extremely successful and reliable tooth loss solution, not every patient is a suitable candidate. Before deciding if this is the right option for you, it’s important to understand some of the limitations that come with this denture solution.
1. They Are More Expensive Than Dentures
While it is true that denture implants are initially more expensive than traditional full/partial dentures, you may want to consider that dentures come with higher maintenance costs, such as repairs, relines and replacements every 5-7 years, leading to higher long-term costs.
Financing Options
At Future Smiles, we help our patients with flexible financing options to make paying for denture implants a smooth and easy process.
2. They Require Surgery
Getting tooth implants is an extensive process that does require surgery. It’s important for patients to understand this because any form of surgery carries the risk of:
- Infection
- Anesthesia-related problems
- Nerve damage
- Excessive bleeding
However, when performed by a qualified denturist, getting tooth implants is a safe, effective and long lasting tooth replacement solution.
3. There Is the Risk of Rejection
Dental implants can sometimes be rejected, but this happens no more than 2 percent of the time and when it does, the implant is usually replaced with another one that is slightly larger.
NOTE: Smokers and diabetics have the highest risk of implant failure, with the likelihood of rejection rising to 8-12%.
Everyone is a Possible Candidate For Denture Implants
Anyone who has lost one or more of their adult teeth at any stage of their life is a possible candidate for dental implants. While some patients may require more careful consideration, assessment and treatment than others, our denturist can guide you through all your tooth replacement options for a more beautiful, confident smile and better oral health.
