Missing a Tooth? Maybe You Need Dental Implants

Calgary Dental Implants

As we’ve learned this month, there are a variety of dental solutions available to those with missing and cracked teeth or oral bone loss.  Yet, we still have one more option to discuss:  Dental Implants.  What are they and how are they placed?  Continue reading to understand the purpose of these clever devices.

What are Dental Implants?
They are synthetic roots (engineered to mimic our natural roots) comprised of titanium.  The implant is inserted into your jawbone so that it can replace your natural root.  Then, your denturist will attach an artificial tooth to the titanium root, creating a dental implant.  The implant is a ballast, holding your new tooth in place.

How are Dental Implants, implanted?
First, it definitely requires the knowledge and skills of a denturist or prosthodontist and then:

  • Mouth Assessment - Your denturist will assess your mouth, jaw, gum line and teeth.  X-rays are required to ensure that you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
  • Stage 1 of Surgery - Once approved as a candidate, stage 1 of surgery will commence:  your denturist will place a dental implant into your jaw, under the gums and stitch your gums back together.  It will require some healing time, typically a couple months, so that the implant and tissue can properly fuse together.
  • Stage 2 of Surgery – After your gums have healed, Stage 2 will begin.  During this stage, your denturist attaches an “abutment”, or a support beam to the implant that will be connected to the artificial tooth.  Some situations allow for Stage 1 & 2 to be performed together.  Ask you denturist if you qualify.
  • Tooth Attachment – After your support beam is in place, your denturist can now attach your new tooth.  Everyone’s mouth is different and therefore some trial and error is expected with situating the tooth correctly.
  • Potential Bridge Placement – If you have several dental implants or full dental implants, a bridge is required to essentially secure an area of missing teeth.  Bridges are fastened to the implants for added security and hold.

One of the best features of dental implants is their natural appearance and natural range of motion they provide.  Since they are attached to the jawbone, they allow for a more organic feel and look.
