Your Denture Guide: What to Expect From the Process

If you are a first time denture wearer, the process can seem a little intimidating at first, but it’s important to always remember that with the right denture solution, your life will be transformed.

Understanding the process of getting replacement teeth can help make the process seem a little less overwhelming and prepare you for the steps ahead.

Step 1: Denture Impressions

The first step in getting dentures is visiting your local denture clinic. Your denturist will take an impression of your mouth and use it as a guide for making your new dentures. If you have to have some teeth extracted, an impression is taken after your gums have healed.

Step 2: Selecting Your New Teeth

Your denturist will help you select the tooth shape and colour (shade of white) you need for your replacement teeth. The goal here is to make your prosthetic look as natural and real as possible.

Step 3: The Initial Fitting

Your denturist will schedule an appointment at the denture clinic for an initial fitting of your dentures. During this time, your denturist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable

Note: After the initial fitting, it’s very normal to need some fine adjustments to eliminate any sore spots and make sure your prosthetic fits as comfortably as possible.

Dentures Take Some Time to Get Used To

At first, your dentures will feel unnatural and it does take some patience to get used to the new teeth. First-time denture wearers often experience symptoms such as:

  • Soreness and irritation
  • Gag reflexes
  • Increased saliva production
  • The sensation of having a ‘full mouth’

Just remember that with some patience and guidance from your denturist, your replacement teeth will eventually feel comfortable and natural, and you’ll be able to speak and eat properly.
