Getting Used To Your New Dentures

A 30-Day Guide

Wearing dentures for the first time is a challenging experience and it will require a slight adjustment period to get used to the new sensation in your mouth.

At Future Smiles, we do our very best to not only fit your dentures perfectly but also to equip you with what to expect.

This 30-day guide shows you how to get used to your dentures so that you can get back to enjoying a beautiful, healthy smile.

Day 1

Start by eating soft foods that are gentle on your gums and teeth. This may include health shakes, soup, ice-cream and mashed potatoes.

Make sure to chew on both sides of your mouth and avoid biting into food with your front teeth as this may dislodge your dentures.

Day 2-14

Your mouth is adjusting to your new dentures. At this time, you may experience:

  • Increased salivation
  • Sore spots in your mouth

Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water or using a denture adhesive to prevent denture movement will help.

Day 15-29

At this point, the sores and the salivation will have lessened.

However, you will also be learning how to eat and speak properly with your new dentures.

Some of our top tips for this adjustment period include:

  • Speak slowly
  • Practice reading out loud with your dentures, especially the words and sounds you find difficult.
  • Bite and swallow before speaking to get your dentures into position. A denture adhesive will help avoid any slips.
  • Start with soft foods and gradually introduce more difficult foods as you get more comfortable.

Day 30

After a month of wearing your dentures, you should be able to enjoy most of your favorite activities confidently.

Remember to visit your denturist on a regular basis to have your dentures checked. A replacement is often recommended every 5-10 years.

At any point...

If at any point you are experiencing discomfort, book a visit with our denturist.

We will be able to check the fit of your dentures and help keep your mouth healthy and comfortable.

If you recently had your teeth extracted or are wearing full dentures, you should expect a longer healing time.

We’re here to help!

To facilitate the adjustment period, Future Smiles offer 3-6 months of FREE ADJUSTMENTS, depending on the type of dentures you opt for. During this time, we will adjust your dentures as needed as well as provide the necessary after-care to avoid any discomfort or health problems.

If you have any questions about dentures for you or one of your family members, our friendly and experienced team members would be happy to help. Contact us at 403-475-0016.
