  • Life-Changing Denture Implants: Procedure, How They Work, Main Benefits

Denture implants represent one of the most significant advancements in tooth replacement technology. Here are how they work, what the procedure entails, and the main benefits someone can expect courtesy of our Calgary denture clinic.

Dentures have been around for centuries. They trace their roots back to 700 BC, when the Etruscans of northern Italy fashioned the first pair out of human and animal teeth. While most people believe the myth that George Washington had wooden dentures, his were actually made of human and animal teeth as well, with some ivory, copper, tin, and silver alloys thrown into the mix.

Like most things over the past half-century, dentures have made astronomical advancements. One of the biggest leaps forward for false teeth has to do with how they are secured into place now. The biggest improvement, of course, being denture implants, which were made possible by the constant evolvement and perfection of dental implants.

The main benefits of using denture implants include:

  • Better eating and speaking ability
  • No slippage or risk of having them fall out
  • The prevention of bone loss
  • No sore spots or discomfort to the gums
  • Attractive and natural-looking
  • Implants can last a lifetime with proper care

Now let's take a closer look at how the denture implant procedure is performed and how these advanced tooth replacements work.

The Denture Implant Procedure

Implant-supported dentures require a bit of a more laborious process than standard complete or partial dentures. Surgery is involved, and it takes two surgical procedures for the anchor roots to be properly inserted and fashioned. Here is the step-by-step process for how denture implants are achieved.

1. Initial consultation

Before anything begins, you will meet with your denturist or dentist to go over the timeline of the procedure and what is involved in it. During this appointment, your denturist will take an X-ray of your mouth and make impressions of it.

2. Anchor roots are implanted

The first surgical procedure will see the anchor roots implanted into your jawbone. These dental implants, which will later support your denture, can last you the rest of your life. But in order to do so, they first require about three to six months to fuse with your jawbone.

It is this fusion with the jawbone that helps prevent the loss of bone density that is associated with missing or removed teeth.

3. Abutments are placed on the implants

The second surgical procedure, which is carried out after the implants have successfully fused with your jawbone, sees abutments placed on the heads of your dental implants. It is these abutments that will connect and secure your denture once it is made.

At this time, your denturist will make another impression of your mouth, which will allow them to make the denture framework and artificial teeth.

4. The dentures are inserted

This appointment will see your denturist place a metal bar over the abutments. You will then get a chance to try your new denture, and if any changes are required, your denturist will either make them right then or further processing will have to be carried out. If you are happy with how they fit and function, your denture will then be permanently secured into place.

You will then receive instructions from your denturist on how to properly care for your implant-supported denture. If any follow-up appointments are required, they will be scheduled at this time.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU'RE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIFE-CHANGING DENTURE IMPLANTS

How Denture Implants Work

Implant-supported denture implants work just like normal dentures do, albeit with greater stability along with improved eating and talking functionality. Because the denture has been permanently secured into place, you will require semi-annual visits to your denturist so they may clean and examine it.

By not having to remove your denture on a daily basis for cleaning and other maintenance, you can best replicate how your natural teeth used to perform. You also don't have to worry about your dentures shifting while you eat or talk, and there is no fear of them ever falling out at an inopportune or embarrassing time.

Implant-supported dentures are truly the pinnacle of false teeth. These highly advanced and stable tooth replacement prosthetics and the accompanying procedure represent dental ingenuity at its best and are life-changing medical devices for those who use them.
