How Do Oral Surgeons and Denturists Work Together For Dental Implants?

Denture implants are a form of permanent denture. Unlike traditional complete dentures that you need to take out for cleaning and sleeping, permanent dentures become fixed to the mouth and function just like natural teeth. In order to achieve this, a person must first receive implants for the dentures to be attached to, a process that involves the skill of an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon and the denturist will work together so that you can receive your implants and have your dentures permanently secured for a comfortable and lasting denture solution. Here is how both of these dental professionals work together to ensure you get top-quality permanent dentures.

Who Is Involved In Denture Implant Surgery?

The Denturist
Before you get denture implants, you will have a consultation with your denturist. Your denturist will explain all of your available options and the benefits and potential difficulties of each and will help you decide which denture option is ideal. Your denturist may perform some initial assessments to determine if you are eligible for dental implants, such as checking for signs of gum disease, discussing your current health and medications, and discussing any pre-existing medical conditions you may have. If you are approved for denture implants, your denturist will then recommend an oral surgeon and will get to work creating your dentures. Once you have been through all of the necessary surgeries and have had adequate healing time, your denturist will fit your permanent dentures and ensure they are comfortable for you. Once the fit is right, the denturist will then secure the dentures in place and you will have a new set of teeth.

The Oral Surgeon
While your denturist will be deeply involved in the denture implant process, they will not be performing the actual surgeries required. These will be done by an oral surgeon. Unlike a denturist or a dentist, oral surgeons are specifically trained in oral pathology, anesthesia, oral surgery, and other specialty areas required specifically for the performance of surgery. The oral surgeon or a member of their team will complete an in-depth evaluation of your oral health to ensure that you are a viable candidate for denture implants. They will use an x-ray to examine the health and strength of your jaw bone and will determine if you need bone grafting before your actual denture implant surgery. Once this is completed, your oral surgeon will perform the surgery that places the implants into the jaw as well as the abutment surgery, which attaches the apparatus that the dentures will attach to. The oral surgeon is responsible for completing all surgical aspects of denture implants.

Coordination
While the denturist and oral surgeon have different jobs to perform throughout this process, they will be in communication with one another so that they can coordinate a treatment plan for you. This coordination also ensures the timeline of surgeries and denture appointments line up so that the denture implants are placed as soon as possible.
