Denture Nutrition: What Foods Should You Eat?

We eat to live! You don’t think too much about it, but chewing plays a major role in maintaining a healthy diet. Our bodies need a high level of nutrition on a daily basis, and it’s our teeth that get the job started. But what happens when you’ve lost your natural teeth? Denturist Vlad at the Future Smiles Denture Clinic in Calgary has a few tips to help you adjust to eating with your new dentures.

You’ve got your new full dentures at the Future Smiles Denture Clinic and you’re excited to take them for a test drive. Denturist Vlad gives you the green light to do all the smiling you want, but avoid the heavy steak dinner. We suggest starting with more liquids in your diet, which include the following:

  • Soup
  • Purees
  • Warm cereals
  • Puddings
  • Eggs
  • Yogurt

Have you ever eaten something right after you’ve brushed your teeth? You probably noticed that the food doesn’t taste quite the same, similarly with your new dentures, food will taste a little different at first. Not to worry, this is temporary, and your sense of taste will soon return to normal.

To keep your dentures balanced, chew your food evenly between both sides of the back of your mouth. The rules we’ve learned from our parents still apply with your new dentures: chew your food slowly and thoroughly before swallowing.

Fruits and vegetables, is there anything they can’t do? Slicing your fruits and vegetables into very thin pieces will make these power foods easy to eat. When it comes to breads, we recommend you eat them with plenty of liquid, to ensure that small grains don’t get stuck in your dentures.

When it comes to meats, we suggest taking a break from red meats, which tend to be tougher in texture and are hard on new dentures. Instead, stick with fish and poultry. If you are craving red meat, denturist Vlad recommends having stews or slow cooked meats, which aren’t too hard on your dentures.
