4 Denture Care Tips You Need to Follow

Are you a first-time denture wearer? Taking good care of your replacement teeth is critical for your oral and overall health. Here are some of the top denture care tips from our Calgary denturist.

Aside from the cosmetic aspect of having your missing tooth/teeth replaced, there are many dental health reasons for fixing the problem. Over time, your remaining teeth will drift to fill in the gap left by the missing tooth and this misalignment can make it hard for a patient to chew or talk. It may even cause bone loss or tooth decay.

At our Calgary Denture Clinic, we offer our patients a wide range of denture solutions to replace missing teeth, including:

  • Traditional complete dentures
  • Traditional partial dentures
  • Flexible partial dentures
  • Implant supported dentures

Are You a New Denture Wearer? Top Denture Care Tips From Our Calgary Denturist

Whichever tooth replacement solution you opt for, be it traditional dentures or implant-supported dentures, taking care of your dental prosthesis is critical if you want to avoid problems such as:

  • Additional tooth loss
  • Tooth decay, gum disease, and plaque build-up
  • Discomfort or sore spots
  • Increased risk of general health diseases such as stroke or lung disease

To help protect your remaining teeth and ensure the longevity of your dentures, here are some simple and easy denture care tips from our Calgary denturist:

1. Clean Your Dentures Every Night

It is very important that you remove your dentures every night for cleaning. Make sure you soak them in a specialized cleaner overnight and ALWAYS change the solution the next day. Remember, if you leave your dentures in too long it may lead to:

  • Gum infection
  • Gum inflammation
  • Sore gums
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant denture odour

2. Brush Your Dentures Daily

Just because your dentures aren’t your real teeth, doesn’t mean they don’t need looking after! Make sure to rinse or brush your dentures after every meal as this is important for removing food and bacteria, as well as preventing your dentures from staining.

However, when you do brush your dentures, make sure to:

  • Use a soft denture brush
  • NEVER use toothpaste as this will scratch your dentures
  • Lay a towel over the sink to prevent breakage or damage should you accidentally drop your false teeth

3. Avoid Using Toothpicks on Your Dentures

If you have food stuck in your dentures, ALWAYS rinse them and NEVER use a toothpick on your false teeth. Doing so can create scratches on your dentures or affect the smooth transition from the tooth to the acrylic (gum) of the denture.

In addition, you may accidentally poke your gums or soft mouth tissues above and below the denture, causing oral injury and pain.

4. Be Careful While Eating

As a denture wearer, you must be very careful about what and how you eat. Avoid using your front dentures on harder foods as this may result in damage. Denturists always recommend that denture wearers stick to softer foods and practice taking small bites, as this will prevent wear and tear of your replacement teeth.
