When Should You Get Your Dentures Relined?

When Should You Get Your Dentures Relined?

When your denture fit is off, it is often noticeable; your dentures likely won’t stay in place very well when you chew or speak or they may irritate your gums. When dentures are no longer properly aligned, they can be uncomfortable and even painful and damaging to your health. Ill-fitting dentures can interfere with your bite, cause sore spots on your gums, increase the risk of infection, and impact your ability to eat and chew. It is simple to remedy this issue by visiting your denturist for a denture reline. A simple denture reline can improve your comfort and your oral health while helping you eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Here are some circumstances when you might need a denture reline.

When To Get A Denture Reline

If Damage Has Occurred
Denture fit can change if some form of damage has occurred to the denture. Damage is often caused by accidentally dropping the denture. Your dentures can also become warped if they are not kept in water while they are out of your mouth, as they can become dried out. These incidents can damage the denture base and they may require either a denture reline or a denture rebase depending on the severity of the damage.

If Sore Spots Develop
More often than not, if you develop sore spots under your dentures, they probably need a denture reline. When your dentures no longer fit you quite right, they will begin to rub against your gums, especially as you speak and chew. Sore spots are not always a sign of poor denture alignment. They are sometimes caused by other factors like a bacterial buildup. Regardless of the cause, if you develop sore spots, you need to visit your denturist to have the issue addressed.

If You Lose Significant Weight
You might not think about your mouth and gums when you lose weight, but it is possible. If you have a period of extreme weight loss, you will likely find that your dentures no longer fit. If you lose weight and your dentures no longer stay in place the way they should, you should visit the denturist for a denture reline. Even if you think you’ll put the weight back on later, it is still worth discussing a denture reline with your denturist.

Every 5 Years
Denture fit will shift no matter how well you care for your dentures. Unless you have denture implants, the shape of your jaw will gradually change over time. In any area of your jaw that has no natural teeth, the jaw will gradually shrink in a process called resorption. This is a completely normal and natural part of wearing dentures, but to account for it and to keep your dentures comfortable, you will need a denture reline approximately every 5 years, depending on what preventative measures you take to avoid jawbone resorption.

FAQ

Q: How many times can dentures be relined?
A: The answer to this question varies on the state of the denture in question. Typically a complete denture will last around 10 years, and it should be relined once every two years if a soft reline is done or once every five years if a hard reline is carried out. That means you can get your full denture soft relined about five times and hard relined about two times.

Q: Is it only complete dentures that need adjustments?
A: While complete dentures may require more frequent adjustments than partial dentures due to the faster loss of jawbone density, many forms of dentures other than denture implants will need adjustments or potentially rebasing.

Q: I’m looking for affordable denture solutions. What options do I have?
A: At Future Smiles Dentures Clinic, we know that Calgarians are looking for low-cost, stress-free denture payment plans. This is why we offer affordable denture solutions, including direct billing and financing.
