What Does A Denturist Consider When Choosing The Right Teeth For Your Denture?

All dentures and denture teeth are created to fit the individual person. This takes into account each person’s unique needs, mouth shape, amount of remaining teeth, desired look, and desired outcome. When denturists are preparing to make a new set of dentures, they will work with you to create dentures that will stay in your mouth and fit comfortably, while also creating a smile you can be proud of. If you are in need of dentures, you may want to learn more about the denture process and how a denturist decides what teeth are best for you.

How Denturists Decide What Teeth To Use For Your Dentures

Your Denturist Asks You
While patients aren’t involved in some of the more technical aspects of selecting the appropriate denture teeth, you will be asked about your opinion of some elements. Your denturist will discuss the colour and tooth shape with you so that you can decide if you want to go for a look similar to your natural teeth or if you want to take this opportunity to brighten your tooth shade and make some changes to your new smile. Your denturist may also ask you what function you value most from your dentures. For example, are you concerned with eating just like you did with your natural teeth or are you more concerned about making sure your dentures look natural and no one will notice they aren’t your real teeth? Your personal preferences will help your denturist select the perfect denture teeth.

Your Remaining Teeth
If you are getting partial dentures or you are only getting complete dentures on one jaw, your denturist will need to take your current teeth into account. If all of your remaining teeth are natural, your denturist will need to use a different material than if you have crowns, denture bridges, or other tooth modifications. The materials used for other dental procedures can wear down denture teeth that are designed to be against natural teeth.

Freedom
When referring to freedom and your denture teeth, denturists are referencing the amount you can move your teeth around when your mouth is closed and your teeth are together. Since dentures are not held in place as firmly as natural teeth (except for denture implants), having teeth with deeply ridged cusps that do not allow teeth to move at all when your teeth are together, can dislodge your dentures out of place while you are chewing. Instead, teeth with a flat top don’t cause your denture teeth to lock together and are easier for eating. To create more freedom for the teeth to move and facilitate eating, your denturist may create a flatter table or flatter cusps than natural teeth would have.

Jaw Health
If a person has not had their natural teeth for a while, jawbone resorption can occur. This is when the jawbone shrinks due to the lack of stimulation that is normally provided by chewing with your natural teeth (and the root of the tooth in the jawbone) in place. If your jawbone has shrunk, this may determine how your dentures need to be made, including how the teeth sit against each other and how ridged they can be.
