Dental implants and denture implants get confused with one another all the time. While both are implanted into a person's jaw bone, the what that's being inserted is very different. Depending on your needs, one is most likely the right tooth replacement option for you.

The Difference Between Dental Implants and Denture Implants

When it comes to the difference between dental implants and denture implants, the key is in the name. While these two terms get mixed up quite often and are at times used interchangeably with one another, it's important that you know the difference if you're interested in having either procedure solve your current tooth loss problem.

Here are the main differences between dental implants and denture implants and which is best suited for specific situations.

Dental implants

Dental implants are a singular tooth replacement option for those who are missing either one or more teeth. The dentist will insert an artificial titanium root into the patient's jawbone and then the artificial tooth will be attached to the implant. The implant anchors the tooth in place, with it looking and functioning very similar to the remaining natural teeth in a patient's mouth.

Who this procedure is for: Dental implants are best suited for people who are missing only one or two teeth. Because of their cost, dental implants are not usually sought when a person must replace three or more missing natural teeth.

Main benefits: Dental implants require minimal maintenance, with the wearer required to care for it exactly how they would their remaining natural teeth, namely brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. Dental implants are also very durable and long-lasting with many people getting upwards of 20 years out of them. They are also extremely natural looking, giving them an aesthetic appeal that is hard to replicate with other tooth replacement options.

Denture implants

Denture implants are a permanent type of overdenture which represent the latest in tooth replacement technology. Much like how dental implants are inserted into a patient's jawbone, denture implants feature multiple abutments which allow the overdenture to be firmly secured into place. This procedure requires two surgeries. One to insert the implants, and another to expose the caps. Once the implants have successfully fused with a patient's jawbone, their denturist will craft their overdenture and connect it to the caps or abutments.

Who this procedure is for: Denture implants are best suited for people who are missing most or all of their natural teeth. For those who still have some of their natural teeth remaining, a partial denture implant may be preferable to surgically removing the remaining teeth before proceeding with the procedure.

Main benefits: Denture implants require very little maintenance and are extremely easy to clean. They also last much longer than their traditional counterparts, and because they're securely attached to abutments in the jawbone, they don't slip or shift while eating. Denture implants are also extremely attractive when crafted by a competent and experienced denturist, and they bring with them little to no eating restrictions.

Now that you know the difference between dental implants and denture implants, you should have a much better idea of which option is the right tooth replacement choice for you. And as always, should you ever have any questions about either, Future Smiles Denture Clinic is always here to help.
