How to Keep Your Dentures Looking and Working Their Best

Complete or full dentures are an investment. As with any investment, you'll want to keep a close eye on them and do everything you can to protect them. Properly caring for your false teeth is the best way to do both. You'll be able to notice any changes that occur right away while keeping them in tip-top shape. Here are the best denture care tips you need to know in order to do this.

The Three Biggest Denture Care Tips You Need to Know

1. Be sure to clean them every day

Cleaning your dentures every day is the biggest tip our denture solutions clinic recommends. This means you need to brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush that has been specifically designed for dentures. But don't use any regular toothpaste to do so. Conventional toothpaste can actually damage your dentures. Just use water to brush your dentures and be sure to clean every part of their surface, taking great care to not bend any attachments or clasps.

Pro tip: Make sure you're rinsing your dentures after every meal. This will help remove any leftover food particles which may be stuck to them, making your daily brushing much easier.

2. Always handle your dentures carefully and treat them well

While this may seem like an obvious thing to do, it bears repeating. Over time we can sometimes get careless with our dentures, especially if we're rushing out the door or late for an appointment. One of the biggest ways you can better protect your dentures is by filling the sink with water and placing towels down on your bathroom counter when removing them for a cleaning or retiring to bed. This will help prevent them from breaking should you accidentally drop them during either situation.

You should also soak your dentures in an approved solution or water anytime you aren't wearing them. This will prevent them from drying out, which makes them more prone to cracking or breaking if they suffer an impact. And if your dentures have any metal attachments, be careful when using cleaning solutions as they could cause your dentures to lose their lustre.

3. Always remove your dentures before going to bed

This is an extremely important denture care tip whether you have complete or partial dentures. Removing your dentures before you go to bed will allow your gum tissue to relax and repair itself after a day's hard work. As mentioned in the tip above, anytime you remove your dentures, you'll want to soak them in order to keep them from drying out. Just make sure you don't use water that is too hot as this could cause your dentures to warp.

By following the above denture care tips from our Calgary denture clinic, you'll be able to keep your dentures looking and working their best for many years to come.
