How Does Your Denturist Determine Your Fit?

How Does Your Denturist Determine Your Fit?

Whether you get complete dentures or partial dentures, they need to fit your mouth perfectly. Because dentures are all made completely unique to the person who will be wearing them, denturists need to precisely match your dentures through customization. If your dentures aren’t properly fitted, you may struggle to speak, chew, or smile because your dentures are too loose or because they are rubbing on your gums and causing sores. None of these scenarios is ok, which is why denturists take the time to create an accurate fit.

What A Denturist Does To Determine Denture Fit

Assessment Of The Mouth And Teeth
When you first get dentures, your denturist will assess the condition of your gums and any remaining teeth. If the teeth are in poor condition or if gum disease has caused teeth to loosen, your denturist may recommend having them removed. Your denturist will recommend you see a dentist or dental surgeon for any tooth removal. This is an important part of the denture process for determining the fit of the denture since partial dentures rely on any remaining teeth to keep the denture in place. If some of these remaining teeth were to fall out or need to be pulled shortly after getting dentures, it would affect the fit of the dentures.

A Mold Of Your Mouth
Before you get your dentures, your denturist will need to make a mold of your mouth so that they can properly match your new dentures to the shape of your gums or any remaining teeth, depending on whether you are getting full dentures or partial dentures. To make a mold of your gums and teeth, your denturist will have you bite down on putty, which will replicate the exact shape of your mouth. The mold of your dentures is the main way dentures are created to comfortably fit in your mouth.

Alterations
When you get your dentures, you will try them on and assess the fit. If areas feel as though they are rubbing uncomfortably, if they are too tight, or if they otherwise don’t feel right, tell your denturist. The denturist will reshape parts of the denture base so that it sits comfortably in the mouth.

Denture Adjustments Over Time
Once you’ve had your dentures for several years, they may not fit as well as they did before. This can be because of wear on the denture but it can also be caused by the changing shape of your jaw. This is especially common in people with complete dentures, as they have less stimulation to the jawbone. If your denture feels loose, your denturist can alter the fit by adding more of the denture base material to the area that sits on the gums. If your denture teeth are also wearing down, you may want to discuss getting a new pair of dentures, although this often takes many years to happen.
