Everything You Need to Know About Denture Implants

Not quite sure what denture implants are or how they work? Gaining rising popularity over the last few years, denture implants provide a long-lasting and attractive alternative to standard partial or complete dentures. Here's everything you need to know about them.

Nowadays there are a lot more choices when it comes to selecting a tooth replacement option. One of the biggest developments in the field has been that of denture implants, which are made up of one or more replacement teeth that are connected to an implant in the jaw. Denture implants may be a bit more costly than your traditional complete or partial dentures, but the additional benefits they provide are well worth it.

How Denture Implants Work

The way denture implants work can be wrapped up in three simple steps:

1. Initial consultation: X-rays will be taken by your denturist who will then make impressions so the models for your replacement teeth and the anchoring locations can be made.

2. Tooth implants: This part of the process requires two surgeries. The first one sees the tooth implants which will anchor your replacement teeth be surgically inserted into your jawbone allowing them to fuse with it. This usually takes about 3-6 months to happen. Once the second surgery is completed, your denturist will place abutments on the implants which are used to secure your replacement teeth. Another impression will then be made by your denturist and the replacement teeth and framework which holds them will be created.

3. Insertion: The final step of the process sees a metal bar placed over the abutments so you may try on your artificial teeth. If anything isn't feeling right or fitting properly, your denturist will make the adjustments right there in the clinic. If everything is fitting properly, your denturist will then permanently secure everything into place. You will then be given specific care instructions to safeguard your new investment and a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to ensure your oral health is optimal.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOURSELF FOLLOWING DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY

Main Benefits of Denture Implants

Denture implants provide numerous benefits for those who choose them. While the higher cost may initially come as a bit of a surprise, you need to keep in mind that they will last a lot longer than traditional partial or complete dentures. Here are the main benefits you can expect should you opt for denture implants in Calgary:

Easy to maintain

Denture implants are extremely easy to maintain. Simply pop out the prosthetic which houses the artificial teeth and go about brushing your remaining natural teeth as normal. Then use a denturist-approved toothpaste or solution and a soft bristled brush to scrub down the prosthetic.

Minimal eating restrictions

There are very little — if any — eating restrictions associated with denture implants. With them being securely fastened to the abutments you don't have to worry about your dentures slipping or shifting as you eat your favourite foods.

Extremely attractive

Denture implants are an extremely attractive tooth replacement option. With the artificial teeth securely attached to the abutments that are in your jaw, denture implants provide very realistic and natural looking teeth that will make it hard for you to stop smiling.

Longevity

Denture implants last much longer than they're traditional counterparts. Because the dentures are securely fastened to your jawbone, they can last upwards of 15-20 years. When you contrast this with partial or complete dentures — which usually need to be replaced after five or so years — it's easy to see that the initial extra cost more than pays for itself over the life of your denture implants.

Given the above benefits, it's easy to see why denture implants have become more and more popular over the past few years. If you'd like to learn more about these attractive and long-lasting alternatives to complete or partial dentures, be sure to give us a call today.
