Dentures At A Young Age: Removing The Stigma Of Dentures

Dentures At A Young Age: Removing The Stigma Of Dentures

There is a perception that dentures are only for seniors, but the reality is that many young people are missing one or more of their teeth. You may not know who around you has dentures because they look natural and most people can’t tell when someone, particularly a young person, has them. If you are missing teeth, dentures are a much better option than leaving the space where the tooth once was.

It’s far more noticeable to have an empty space amid your teeth than to have an artificial tooth, and it’s much better for your dental and jaw health to have that space filled.

Dentures aren’t always a full set of teeth; you can get partial dentures that go around your remaining natural teeth and fill in gaps. There are a number of reasons that people may need dentures regardless of age, and there are many reasons why it’s better to have dentures than not.

Dentures Can Benefit Any Age

How Does Tooth Loss Happen?

There are many ways a young person may lose their teeth, including

  • Sports injuries
  • Car accidents
  • Gum disease, such as gingivitis or periodontitis
  • Medical conditions that expose the teeth to stomach acid
  • Other diseases
  • Adult teeth never growing in (hypodontia)

Why Choose Dentures?

Proper Tooth Alignment And Health. The hole in your gums that is created can become a breeding ground for bacteria. The gums in the area of the missing tooth become more susceptible to disease as do the teeth around it. This would be prevented if there was an artificial tooth in the space. Having missing teeth can cause the other teeth to shift into the space and misalign in the mouth, causing malocclusion that can affect your bite. By getting an artificial tooth, that space is preserved and the rest of the teeth can stay properly aligned.

Denture Technology Creates Many Options. Dentures are no longer the bulky plates you might think of; they are lightweight, natural looking teeth. Dentures come in different types, including full and partial dentures, implant dentures, and flexible dentures, so that you can get the denture option that suits your needs.

Eating Habits. When you have a missing tooth or several missing teeth, you may try to avoid foods that are difficult to eat, particularly fresh vegetables and other foods that are hard to chew. There may be foods that get stuck in the space where your tooth once was, such as seeds. Depending on the location of your tooth loss, your ability to eat the foods you love and foods that are conducive to a healthy diet can be limited. It may make you self conscious of eating around others, and can discourage eating in public situations.

Confidence. Having missing teeth, particularly as a young adult, may make you feel embarrassed or feel discouraged from smiling and even speaking. Unfortunately, there is a negative social perception around those who are missing teeth, as your face is the first thing people see when they meet you. Living with this self consciousness is a burden that is easily fixed. Modern dentures look so natural that no one will know you’re wearing them, so you can get back to smiling and speaking with confidence and feeling like yourself.

FAQ

Q: None of my friends have dentures and I don’t have anyone to talk to about it. Where do I start?
A: If you’ve never had dentures before, come for a free consultation and our denturist can determine which denture options are right for you. Our staff will show you the differences between types of dentures, such as partial dentures and flexible dentures, and explain everything you need to know, from which dentures to choose, how long they will take, and what financing options you have. You’re encouraged to ask any questions you may have and by the end of the free consultation, you should feel comfortable in your denture knowledge.

Q: How long will it take to adjust to my new dentures?
A: This can vary depending on the individual. Some clients find after 30-40 days that they are incorporating a variety of foods and speaking with ease. Some clients find that it takes longer, maybe 2-3 months of practice to feel comfortable with their new dentures. Following the guidelines to an easy adjustment period, which will be given to you at your Calgary Denture Clinic, will ensure a smoother transition period.

Q: What can happen if I don’t get dentures when I need them?
A: When you lose a tooth to disease or through an accident and do not replace it, a section of the jaw bone will suffer from bone resorption. This means there is no tooth root embedded into the bone, your bone density and shape will change over time to make up for what isn’t there anymore. Beyond this  jaw bone loss, you may also suffer from infection of the exposed gum. Go see a denturist before you reach this stage and avoid the pain and dental work that comes with it.
