5 Rules You Should Always Follow When It Comes to Denture Care

It doesn't matter if you have partial or complete dentures, both types need to be properly cared for to ensure their longevity. This will allow them to function as they're designed to and provide you with a wonderful smile for years to come. By following the five rules listed below, you'll be able to protect your smile and investment for as long as possible.

1. Always give your dentures and gums a break

It's very important that you take your dentures out every night before going to bed. Unless your denturist or dentist has advised you not to. This will let your dentures and gums get a break as you sleep, letting the tissue in your mouth recover. You should also soak your dentures in water or a mild solution overnight. This will keep your dentures from drying out and potentially cracking or breaking.

2. Always handle your dentures with care

As time goes on we can get careless handling the important things in our lives. Dentures included. One momentary lapse could result in serious damage to your dentures, which is why it's always important to handle them with the utmost care. One tip to protect against breakage when removing your dentures to clean them or soak them for the night is to lay a towel down on your bathroom counter, or to fill up the sink with water before taking them out. This will provide a softer landing for your dentures should you accidentally drop them.

3. Always clean your dentures regularly

Proper denture cleaning is a crucial part of everyday denture maintenance. This means you should be cleaning your dentures at least once a day, preferably twice a day if possible. We instruct our patients to care for their false teeth much the same way they would natural teeth, just without the flossing. Try to use a soft bristled brush paired with an approved toothpaste or solution. If you don't know if a toothpaste or solution is able to be used to clean your dentures, simply give us a call and we'd be happy to let you know.

4. Always be aware of any changes to how your dentures fit

If your dentures suddenly don't fit the way they used to, you should call your denturist or dentist right away. If you don't, your dentures could be placed under stress they weren't designed to handle which could lead to them cracking or breaking. You could also cause yourself to suffer pain or irritation. While you might be afraid of having to incur the costs of repairing, rebasing, or relining your dentures, it will be a small price to pay compared to having to buy brand new dentures should your current ones break due to an improper fit.

5. Always visit your denturist regularly

Visiting your denturist regularly for routine check ups is one of the best ways you can protect your dentures. Your denturist will be able to spot any issues that may be occurring well before they become a full blown or potentially damaging problem. We always recommend that our patients come and see us at least once a year so we can make sure their whole mouth health and dentures are in optimal shape. If you can do so, we highly advise booking two visits a year so we can stay on top of everything even better.
