High-quality dentures are made from a very durable material and when taken care of, can last for many years. However, over time, you may find that your replacement teeth aren’t fitting as well as they used.
This could be due to several reasons, including:
- daily wear and tear
- bone loss
- changes in mouth shape
- accidental breakages

What is a Denture Reline?
As you age, the shape of your jawbone and gums will naturally change, meaning that your dentures won’t fit as well as they used to. A dental reline is a simple procedure that aims to reshape the underside of a patient’s denture in order to make them fit in the mouth more securely and comfortably.
Depending on your needs, there are two types of adjustments:
1. Hard Reline
If you have full dentures, you should consider getting hard relines at least every two years. This is the best way to make sure your replacement teeth fit comfortably without needing to do a whole new fitting.
What happens:
- Your denturist will remove some of the plastic from the inside of your dentures.
- They’ll place putty wherever the denture makes contact with the tissue.
- An impression will then be made using the putty and denture together.
- Once the putty has hardened, it will be replaced by adding acrylic to the tissue side of your denture.
- Once completed, the denture should fit your mouth perfectly.
Benefits: A hard reline will provide a more permanent fix to your problem and typically lasts longer than a year. They are also more cost-effective than soft relines.
2. Soft Reline
Some denture patients can no longer wear their dentures because their gums are just too tender, leading to sore spots in the mouth. In this case, a soft reline is often the best option. It is often recommended for new-denture wearers and those that have bone reabsorption occurring.
What happens
When a soft reline is done, a liquid polymer is layered into the denture to add additional depth and cushion, thus improving the patient’s level of comfort while wearing them.
Benefits: A soft reline is kinder to tissue which can be made tender by the pressure of dentures.
4 Signs You Need a Denture Reline
Even the best-fitting dentures can become loose and uncomfortable over time. Scheduling a denture reline restores the appliance’s snug fit, so you can eat and talk the way you want to. Some of the signs that you may need a reline include:
- prolonged discomfort, sores, and infections
- difficulty chewing your food
- it’s been at least two years since your last denture reline
- your dentures feel loose
