Loose denture? A Calgary denture reline may restore the fit.
As your gums and jawbone change over time, a denture that once fit well can become loose and uncomfortable. A reline refits your existing complete or partial denture, and can be a cost-effective way to delay replacing it.
Three types of denture reline.
A reline adds new material to the tissue side of your denture so it fits the current shape of your mouth. Your denturist will recommend the type that suits your gums and oral health.
Soft reline
May be recommended for patients with sore gums or oral health concerns.
Hard reline
May be recommended for patients with good oral health and healthy gums.
Temporary reline
A short-term solution while your mouth heals or other treatment is planned.
Understand pricing, coverage and financing before treatment.
Future Smiles offers free consultations, accepts major dental insurance including CDCP, NIHB and AISH, offers direct billing where available, and provides access to Medicard financing for eligible treatment.
Signs a reline may help.
A well-fitting, comfortable denture matters. Patients who may benefit most from a reline include those with:

How often should dentures be relined?
Most denture wearers should have their dentures relined every one to two years, so the fit keeps up with the changing shape of the gums without affecting appearance.
Never reshape a denture yourself
Attempting to adjust or reshape your own denture can lead to breakage, a worse fit and higher replacement costs.
If your dentures feel loose or uncomfortable, always see a qualified professional.

Soft denture relines in Calgary
A soft reline adds a cushioned, flexible lining to the fitting surface of your denture. It can make a denture more comfortable if you have thin or sensitive gums, sharp bony ridges or persistent sore spots that a hard reline cannot relieve.
Soft liners are gentler but wear faster than hard acrylic, so they are usually checked and replaced more often. Your denturist will explain whether a soft, hard or temporary reline suits your mouth and how long you can expect it to last.
| Reline type | Best for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Hard reline | Restoring fit when gums have shrunk over time | Usually the longest-lasting reline |
| Soft reline | Sensitive gums, sore spots and thin tissue | Shorter; checked and replaced more often |
| Temporary reline | Healing gums after extractions or while tissue settles | Short term, until a lasting reline or new denture |
Denture reline questions, answered.
How long does a denture reline take?
Many relines can be completed in a single day, and some soft or temporary relines are done chairside in one appointment. Because Future Smiles has an in-house denture lab in Calgary, our team can usually tell you the turnaround when you book.
How often should dentures be relined?
Many denturists suggest checking the fit every one to two years, because gums and bone slowly change shape. You may need a reline sooner after extractions, weight changes or if your denture starts to rock, rub or trap food.
Is a soft reline better than a hard reline?
Neither is better for everyone. Soft relines cushion sensitive gums but wear faster. Hard relines last longer and suit most patients whose gums have simply changed shape. Your denturist will recommend one after examining your gums and denture.
Can I reline my denture at home?
Home reline kits are not recommended. They can change your bite, trap bacteria and make a professional reline harder later. If your denture feels loose, book a check at either Future Smiles clinic instead.
Do I need a referral to see a denturist in Calgary?
No. You can contact Future Smiles directly to book a free consultation at our Coral Springs (NE) or Macleod Trail (SW) clinic. If your situation needs coordination with your dentist or another oral health provider, our team will discuss that with you.
Does insurance or CDCP cover this service?
Future Smiles accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), NIHB, AISH and major dental insurance plans, with direct billing where available. Coverage, eligibility and co-payments vary by plan, so our team reviews your expected patient portion with you before treatment begins. Medicard financing is also available for eligible treatment.
