Denture Care Dos & Don'ts

Whichever tooth loss solution option you choose, be it traditional partial/complete dentures, or implant-supported dentures, taking care of your replacement teeth is crucial if you want to avoid:

  • Additional tooth loss
  • Sore spots and significant discomfort
  • Plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth decay
  • Serious general health issues including increased risk for stroke and lung disease

First-time denture wearer? Here are some simple and easy denture care dos and don’ts to help protect the health of your remaining teeth and ensure the longevity of your dentures:

DO: Take your dentures out overnight for cleaning. Make sure they soak in a specialized cleaner overnight and REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE SOLUTION DAILY.

If dentures are left in too long, it can lead to:

  • Gum infections
  • Inflammation
  • Sore gums
  • An unpleasant denture odour

DON’T: Use toothpicks or hard dental scrapers on your dentures.

Dentures do not have the same sensations as natural teeth and you may accidentally poke and damage soft mouth tissues.

DO: Brush your dentures daily.

Brushing your dentures after meals is very important for removing food and bacteria, as well as preventing your dentures from staining. When doing this remember:

  • NEVER to use toothpaste as this will scratch your dentures
  • To use a soft denture-brush
  • To lay a towel over the sink to eliminate breakage should you accidentally drop them

Don’t: Bite and pull with tugging motions when eating

At meal times, avoid using your front dentures on harder foods as this may cause them to chip or break. Denturists always recommend practicing taking small bites, as this will prevent breakage and wear of your dentures.

Are your complete/partial dentures chipped or damaged?

Do: Take care of your mouth and gums.

In order for your complete/partial dentures to fit properly, they need a healthy base of gums to fit around. So when you take your dentures out for cleaning, remember to gently brush:

  • Your gums
  • Tongue
  • Roof of your mouth

This will ensure that any bacteria buildup is prevented and it keeps the blood flowing and mouth tissues thriving. REMEMBER: Brush and floss any remaining natural teeth as part of your daily dental and denture care.
