Cleaning your dentures at home
Professional cleaning works best alongside good daily habits. These steps help keep your dentures fresh between visits:
- Rinse after eating to remove food particles.
- Brush daily with a soft denture brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Regular toothpaste can scratch acrylic.
- Soak overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution, unless your denturist advises otherwise.
- Avoid hot water and bleach, which can warp or discolour dentures.
- Clean your mouth too: brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth.
Denture cleaning questions, answered.
How often should dentures be professionally cleaned?
Many patients benefit from a professional cleaning about once a year, or sooner if staining, tartar-like buildup or odours return quickly. Future Smiles patients receive one complimentary denture cleaning each year.
What does a professional denture cleaning remove?
Professional cleaning uses equipment that is not available at home to help remove stubborn stains from coffee, tea or tobacco, hardened buildup and odour-causing deposits. The denture is then polished so it looks and feels fresher.
How long does a professional denture cleaning take?
Most cleanings are completed during the same visit. Call the clinic to book a time that suits you, and the team will let you know how long to plan for.
Do I need a referral to see a denturist in Calgary?
No. You can contact Future Smiles directly to book a free consultation at our Coral Springs (NE) or Macleod Trail (SW) clinic. If your situation needs coordination with your dentist or another oral health provider, our team will discuss that with you.
Does insurance or CDCP cover this service?
Future Smiles accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), NIHB, AISH and major dental insurance plans, with direct billing where available. Coverage, eligibility and co-payments vary by plan, so our team reviews your expected patient portion with you before treatment begins. Medicard financing is also available for eligible treatment.
