New Dentures? A Guide to the Adjustment Period

Calgary Denture Clinic

Each and every mouth is unique, and as such each pair of dentures is also unique. Whether your new pair of dentures is your first or a replacement for you last pair the you will likely experience a period of adjustment.

The Adjustment Period

Though your denturist will do his or her best to ensure your new dentures are an exact fit for your mouth as you wear your new dentures you may notice small changes as the soft tissues in your mouth work to accommodate your new dentures. This adjustment period typically lasts from 2 to 6 weeks after insertion. During this adjustment period you may experience some discomfort though this will pass with time and can be mitigated through regular adjustments to your dentures. During the first few weeks you may also notice that your saliva production has increased. This is a normal part of the adjustment period and is not a cause for alarm. This increased saliva production will gradually subside as your mouth becomes accustomed to your new dentures. You may also notice some sore spots on your gums during the adjustment period. These can be easily addressed with regular adjustments to your dentures by your denturist. If you experience any soreness between adjustments you can ease some of the discomfort by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.

Future Smiles Denture Clinic Adjustment Policies

Because the soft tissues in your mouth will take some time to adjust to your new dentures. To help facilitate this process and make your dentures as comfortable as possible Future Smiles offers a complimentary 3 month adjustment window for any pair of dentures purchased through us. During this time period we will adjust your dentures as needed as well as provide aftercare as you adjust to your new dentures.

If your treatment plan recommends that you undergo tissue conditioning or have your dentures relined it is extremely important that you follow the appointment schedule laid out for you by your denturist. These follow up appointments will help us ensure that your dentures fit properly and do not cause any health problems.
