How are Dentures Repaired, and Why?

Our mouths are not only always moving, they’re also always changing. For denture wearers, that means that after some time, you might discover that your dentures don’t fit perfectly like they used to, or they might even break or crack. In any case, these are all signs that it’s time to come in to our Calgary denture clinic, Future Smiles, for an adjustment or a repair.

In addition, I know that living without dentures isn’t fun. Eating and talking become nearly impossible, so that’s why I do emergency denture repairs. I work hard to get my patients back into great quality dentures in a short period, and I refuse to charge extortionate amounts for the work simply because I care about my patients’ comfort and happiness.

Why do dentures break or crack?

As we age, our mouths change shape slightly. When that happens, we might notice that our dentures don’t fit as well as they did when they were brand new. As a result, we start doing things like creating suction, to try to keep the dentures fitting tightly in our mouths so that when we chew or talk, they don’t fall out.

First, let me say that if you find your dentures aren’t fitting well, you should call me at Future Smiles Denture Clinic to make an appointment to have your dentures refitted. If you wait too long, there’s a possibility that your dentures could crack or break.

That leads me to the next step. After wearing dentures that don’t fit right for some time, the material in the dentures can crack because it’s constantly being forced to flex. Like any semi-flexible material, repeated flexing can make it crack or even break. There’s also the risk that one of the false teeth in our dentures can fall out because of all that flexing.

Do not fix your own dentures!

It’s really important that if our dentures crack or if a false tooth comes loose or falls out, we don’t try to fix it ourselves. Some denture clinics say it’s possible to fix dentures with superglue, but the fact is that’s not the case at all. Trying to fix dentures at home can cause more damage than good, and a denturist like myself uses repair materials that aren’t available in most households. Also, if our dentures are cracking because they no longer fit properly, attempting to fix cracks at home isn’t going to solve the problem. It’s far smarter and more cost-effective to call a Calgary denturist to repair the dentures correctly.

How are dentures repaired?

A denturist can decide whether our dentures are fixable or if they’re beyond repair. Sometimes, it’s possible to fix the existing set of dentures, but sometimes it could be necessary to recast the set to make a proper repair.

However, I recommend my patients come in so I can discover the root of the problem and we can decide whether fitting you for a new set of dentures is necessary. Usually, this works out to be the least costly option in the long run. I always try to get you back into dentures as quickly as possible so you can get back to your normal lifestyle.
