How Often Should My Denture Implants Be Checked?

Denture implants Calgary

Do you have denture implants? Here’s why it’s important to schedule regular visits with your denturist to ensure optimal oral health.

Traditionally, for patients who required a tooth loss replacement, the most common method used was full/partial dentures. However, thanks to the incredible advancements in denture technologies, a more natural-looking and durable option is now available.

Denture implants are a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. Unlike traditional full/partial dentures, denture implants don’t sit directly on your gums, providing benefits.

These include:

  • Better comfort and fit
  • No diet restrictions
  • Longer lifespan
  • No speech problems
  • They never slip out of place

How Often Will I Have to Have My Denture Implants Checked?

After receiving your dental implants, it’s very important that you visit your denturist regularly to ensure that healing has been successful and to diagnose any developing problems (such as an infection or peri-implantitis) as soon as possible.

Right after your implant procedure, your denturist may recommend frequent visits, but after healing is completed, you can return to a schedule of bi-annual checkups.

Why You Should Visit The Denturist More Often When You Have Dental Implants

After your implant procedure, it’s important to ensure that you’re healing well. If your implants aren’t healing properly, then they could fail, and once they do, it’s much riskier to try them again. These frequent visits will allow your denturist to check for common causes of implant failure, such as gum disease or peri-implantitis.

What is Peri-Implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease that leads to a gradual decrease in jaw bone around the area surrounding the dental implant. Patients who are smokers or who practice poor oral care at a higher risk of developing this condition.

Some of the signs of peri-implantitis include:

  • Dental implant pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose implant
  • Bleeding at the gum line

If left untreated, peri-implantitis can result in the loss of your implant, which is why it’s important to visit your denturist as soon as you begin experiencing any of the above symptoms.

Taking Care of Your Denture Implants

If you take good care of your denture implants, you can greatly increase your chances of successful healing. Make sure to closely follow any post-surgical instructions given to you by your denturist.

These could include:

  • Taking any prescribed medications.
  • Brushing and flossing your implants regularly.
  • Flossing around the abutments of your implants to prevent the onset of gum disease.
  • Visiting your denturist for follow-up appointments or on-going checkups.
  • Quitting smoking.

Remember, with proper care, your denture implants can last you for the rest of your life. If you do notice any symptoms, such as pain or inflammation, that could indicate a problem, be sure to notify your dentist/denturist as soon as possible.
