Denture Relining
As you age, the shape of your jawbone and gums will naturally change, meaning that your dentures will not fit as well as they used to.
A denture reline can adapt the fitting surface of your denture to accommodate these changes in your mouth, ensuring your replacement teeth fit well and feel more comfortable.
Hard Denture Reline
A hard denture reline helps to improve the stability of your dentures and involves several different steps including:
- The old fitting surface of your denture will need to be removed
- A soft impression material is placed inside the surface of your denture and used to take an accurate impression of your mouth
- The technical team at our denture clinic use this impression to fabricate a model of a new, hard acrylic denture base
Soft Denture Reline
Some patients have particularly sensitive gums and hard dentures can cause sore spots and discomfort. In such a case, a soft denture reline can be kinder to the mouth because it uses a soft and pliable material that makes the denture much more comfortable to wear.
Given that the material can harden over time, a soft denture reline will need to be done every 1-2 years. The procedure involves:
- Removing the hard plastic from the fitting surface of the denture.
- A layer of impression material is placed over the newly-trimmed fitting surface and used to take an accurate impression of your mouth.
- This impression is used to fabricate a model to accurately place soft reline material on the fitting surface of your denture.
4 Signs You Need a Denture Reline
Some of the most obvious signs you require a denture reline include:
- Swelling and pain in gums due to poorly fitting dentures
- Denture stabilization problems
- Difficulty eating and speaking
- You don’t want to replace your existing dentures with new ones
Denture Rebase
Unlike a denture reline, a denture rebase is a more drastic and thorough replacement of ALL the acrylic in the base of a denture. It is used when the teeth are good, but the base leaning on soft tissues needs a complete new adjustment.
Some of the reasons why your denturist may recommend a denture rebase include:
- A broken/damaged denture
- Weakened/old denture base
- You are transforming an ‘immediate’ denture into a ‘permanent’ one
- The comfort or fit of your denture is not as good as it used to be
Typically, a denture rebase is required every 5-7 years to renew the lifespan of your replacement teeth and ensure they feel and function like new.
