Denture Repairs - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Nothing can make your stomach drop quite like a murderous pebble smacking your windshield, resulting in an ominous chip that will undoubtedly spread into surrounding veins like a festering infection. Much like the unmistakable ping of a $500 windshield repair, the feeling of a broken denture tooth or a crack in the acrylic base of your denture can equally make your palms sweaty. The inconvenience and cost of a denture repair might send you into a search frenzy for “best denture repair glue” or “DIY denture repair kit,” but before you impulsively check out your online shopping cart, here is some cautionary advice you need to hear on denture repairs.

The three most common types of Denture Repairs include:

  • A fracture or break
  • Chipped dentures
  • Cracked dentures

Denture Repairs can seem easy enough, and a clean break may seem fixable with some Krazy Glue; however, there are several reasons you should head to the denture clinic instead.

The Good - Safe, Fast, Effective Denture Repairs

When it comes to denture repairs, heading to a professional means you can trust the repair’s materials and quality. At Future Smiles, all our fabrics are made in our in-house lab, so we know exactly what is being used to create and repair your dentures and provide you with peace of mind knowing that your dentures can be fixed fast, safely and effectively. While you might be able to find a denture repair kit at Shoppers Drug Mart, you can also visit us for safe, and in most cases, same-day repairs. It might cost a little more than a cheap repair kit, but it could prolong the lifespan of your dentures, saving you more money than it would replace them from a botched DIY repair attempt.

The Bad - DIY Denture Repairs Gone Wrong

The first and most obvious reason why you shouldn’t repair your dentures yourself is costly mistakes. Instead of an average $100-200 repair, you might be looking at a complete denture replacement. Don’t fall for the seemingly quick-fix internet epoxy resin kits to seal a crack or the industrial-strength super glue to put that tooth back into place. Cheap materials or easily made mistakes can cause further damage or ruin your dentures completely, making them uncomfortable or impossible to wear. A $10 Repair kit can end up costing you a new set of dentures when it could have been a much less expensive repair if appropriately done by a licensed denturist.

The Ugly - The Dangers of DIY Denture Repairs

Although we can learn a lot from Youtube tutorials, it is best to leave internet products and advice to less expensive projects that you don’t put in your mouth. In an age where you can buy almost anything online, be wary of Glues and resins that are not health standardized. Some of the alarming health hazards of DIY denture repairs include:

  • Harbouring bacteria
  • Infection
  • Toxins
  • Irritants
  • Rashes

Denture clinics and denturists ensure that anything you will wear in your mouth is top-quality, non-toxic and won’t irritate your tissues. There is no regulatory authority on the internet that controls what can be advertised for denture repairs, whether toxic or not. The last thing you want is to wear a toxic appliance in your mouth that can lead to toxin absorption into your bloodstream, irritation to your gums and tissue and more.

FAQ's

Can you use Gorilla Glue to repair dentures?

Online Q & A's might tell you that technically, the glue will bind your dentures together. However, you will probably have to remove the glue and re-glue it as it starts to wear off, which can be quite the process, not to mention the amount of toxic glue you will ingest and the damage your dentures will take from this botched DIY procedure. It is always best to consult a professional for a denture repair.

How much does it cost to get dentures repaired?

On average, denture repairs only cost $100-200, depending on the repair. While a DIY repair kit may be closer to $10-20, a poor repair can end up costing you a new set of dentures entirely, which costs up to $5000. Worried about affording the cost of repairs? At Future Smiles Denture Clinic, we have financing options available for those who are uninsured or underinsured so you can get your dentures repaired properly.

What do I do if my denture cracks or breaks?

The first step is to call or visit your denturist right away if your denture requires repairs. Depending on the break, the denture clinic may be able to repair the same denture day. If the denture needs replacing or repairs are expected to take longer, your denturist will be able to advise on what to do in the meantime.
