Dentist or Denturist?

When it comes to tooth restoration or replacement such as dentures, many patients understand the importance of visiting a dental professional to help diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate solution.

However, there are key differences between denturists and dentists and it is important to be aware of and understand these differences before making an appointment.

Denturists

A denturist is a formally trained, licensed dental professional who specializes in providing denture care and solutions to his/her patients and is uniquely prepared to create high-quality dentures.

They are experts in the design, construction, insertion, and repair of removable full and partial dentures and implant supported dentures.

Responsibilities of a Denturist

A denturist’s main goal is to provide aesthetically pleasing, comfortable dentures to replace any missing teeth. In order to do this, denturists are trained to:

  • Collect medical history information from patients in order to identify their suitability for dentures
  • Perform a visual examination of the patient’s mouth, teeth, and facial structure
  • Take dental impressions that are used to construct, re-line, and repair dentures
  • Fabricate complete upper and lower immediate, conventional and upper dentures - denturists also fabricate partial dentures
  • Insert the denture into the patient’s mouth and make any necessary adjustments to improve comfort

Alberta Denturists

In Alberta, denturists are licensed by the provincial government and regulated by the College of Alberta Denturists. You may visit a denturist without a referral from any other health care professional.

What is the difference between a denturist and a dentist?

To qualify as a licensed denturist, it is required to take the Denturist Technology program at an accredited college in Canada and complete a practicum under a licensed denturist.

This training and experience give denturists a unique advantage when dealing with patients experiencing tooth loss as they are able to provide informed, effective and long-lasting denture solutions.

Dentists, on the other hand, are health care practitioners who specialize in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of conditions pertaining to the oral cavity. Many dentists will refer their patients to a licensed denturist, who are mostly independent primary health care providers.

In fact, dentists and denturists often work closely together as a team to ensure that their patients receive the best oral and tooth replacement care possible.

Benefits of Visiting a Denturist

If you are experiencing tooth loss due to age, injury or disease, visiting a denture clinic can help restore your natural smile. Some of the benefits of visiting a denturist include:

1. Advice, support & compassion

One factor that is often overlooked is how emotionally difficult the process of tooth loss can be. Activities that once came naturally such as chewing, talking and eating become uncomfortable and embarrassing.

Visiting a denturist can help ease your worries as they are able to provide you with the information you require to determine what denture solution is right for you.

2. Custom Denture Solutions

Because denturists are qualified practitioners, they are able to provide quality, custom denture solutions to their patients. They are committed to creating dentures that fit well, are aesthetically pleasing, and allow you to maintain your oral health.
